united states

What did you think when you first heard “The United States?”

State superpower, superpower, an institution that ordain themselves as the world’s policeman, who either because nosy or hobby, his name is almost always tercatut in every bloody conflict throughout the continent ?.

Or a country that promises progress of civilization with the swift technological progress ?. Overrated? Apparently not, for example only the Internet, the Internet is a technology originally developed by the United States for military purposes and now see the effect on modern life? Extraordinary!.

Indeed, it should be recognized, the pages of history shows how the United States and His government has “more power” in world politics. Just look at its role in the UN, the United States Government as a permanent UN security council members with veto power several times “thwart” the decisions of the United Nations.

So how exactly the US government is run?

The United States or the United States of America (U.S.A.) is a federal Republic composed of 50 states whose territory lies mostly in North America and its capital in Washington D.C. America is made up of 13 former British colonies that became independent on July 4, 1776. After the American expands massively, through the purchase of Louisiana from France as well as areas of Alaska from Russia and the annexed areas of Mexico that belongs to New Mexico, Texas, and California after the Mexican-American War. United States Government System uses Presidential System of Government, where the US president is head of state and head of government.

The system is based on the Government of the United States Constitution (Constitution) in 1787. The constitution until today has undergone several amendments. United States has a strong democratic tradition and have deep roots throughout the layers of the society, even the spirit of democracy and freedom has stated in its declaration of independence.

The United States is the oldest federations in the world that still survive to this day. The US is a constitutional republic and representative democracy, “with the majority rule limited by minority rights protected by law”. Government regulated by a system of “checks and balances” established by the United States Constitution – the supreme law of the source country.

Well, Check and Balance is what?

Checks and balances system is a system that allows each of the branches of government to perform mutual supervision functions, so that violations of the law by one or more branches of the government can be minimized or avoided.

The main idea in checks and balances is an attempt to divide the existing power into the branches of power in order to avoid the dominance of one group. Checks are basically used to balance (balance) of power. Checks and Balances deliberately created to limit the power of government.

Then, how the concept of Check and Balance it run?

Power of the United States government is divided into three branches, namely, the legislative (Congress, which consists of the House of Representatives and Senate), executive (the President) and the Judiciary (Supreme Mahmakah). In this division president has significant powers to the legislature, which allows the president to pass a bill or veto it. The result was the president can work with the legislature to increase federal power, and as a warning to legislators to not do tindangan that nature does not support executives.

As an example of its application in the United States government, concept of checks and balances system is run following the President has the authority to veto a bill that has been accepted by Congress (sort MPR), but the veto can be overturned by Congress with the support of a 2/3 vote House of Representative (DPR sort of) and the Senate (a kind of messenger state institutions).

Adaiah strict separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches is commonly called the Separation of Power Theory inspired Trias Politica doctrine of Montesquieu taught that sustu power in the state should be separated into three (3) power, namely:

  1. Exclusive : The President is the supreme military commander, has veto power to suspend or reject the draft law before the legislature passed into law (with the approval of Congress), appoints the members of the cabinet (with the consent of the Senate) and other government officials to regulate and enforce policy and federal law.
  2. Legislative : Congress bi-cameral, consisting of the Senate and House of Representatives. His job is to make federal law, declares war, approves treaties, approve the budget, and has the power to hold the government accountable, which could depose someone from the seat of government
  3. Judiciary : The Supreme Court and federal courts lower. Hakim-judge appointed by the president with Senate approval, tasked with enforcing laws and reviewing and canceling the laws they deem unconstitutional.

Executive power is held by the President elected by the people. The President serves as head of state and head of government. President and vice president elected through the elections, so it is not accountable to Congress. But if the president commits crimes and severe violations (high crimmines and misdemeasnors), that activities against the state such as treason, corruption, etc. can be fired then president (impeachment).

As mentioned before, the Congress as the legislative branch consists of two rooms, namely the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Senate (Senate). Senate members are representatives of each state, each of which amounted to two people. So there are 100 senators, each state is represented by two senators elected by the entire population of the state for a term of six years, one third of Senate seats elected every two years. President to serve for four years and may be re-elected in the general election not more than two times. The President is not elected through direct voting, but through indirect election by the electoral college; every state and the District will determine elektor to choose the president and vice president. The Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of the United States has a nine-member Supreme Court Justices with lifetime tenure. While the House of Representative (DPR) is determined based on population. The House of Representatives has 435 members of the board are elected through voting, each of which represents a congressional district with a two-year term. The distribution of seats in the House is determined by population in each state every ten years (according to the census). For example, based on the 2000 census, seven states have at least one representative, while California, which is the most populous state, it had 53 representatives in the House.

Judicial power is at the Supreme Court (Supreme of Court). The Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal judicial system. The Supreme Court took care of matters related to the federal government, disputes between states, and the interpretation of the US Constitution and can declare executive and legislative action to some extent unconstitutional. The Supreme Court can overturn legislation and create a precedent for laws and decisions on the future.

Lastly, how the monitoring function of the power applied?
